  4.      The purpose of this file is to allow you to get a quick look at
  5.      what THE INTERSTATE TRAVELER can do.  A more detailed description
  6.      of the program can be found in the MANUAL.DOC file.

  8.                           ... INTRODUCTION ...
  9.  
  10.          THE INTERSTATE TRAVELER is designed for planning motor trips
  11.      across the contiguous United States using the Interstate Highway
  12.      System and roadways you add to the system.  The final products of
  13.      the program are an itinerary and an estimate of expenses for each
  14.      day of the trip.
  15.          Planning a trip involves specifying the route you want to take
  16.      in a point to point manner.  You specify an origin city, then each
  17.      intermediate city or highway junction along the way, and a final
  18.      destination.
  19.          The program provides opportunities to stop for meals, gas, rest,
  20.      visits, and overnight stays.  At each overnight stop, you can print
  21.      an itinerary and an estimate of your expenses for the day.
  22.          You are provided with the means to add cities, towns, highways,
  23.      and junctions to the screen maps.  You can use these new features in
  24.      the current run of the program only or make them a permanent part of
  25.      the program data files.
  26.          The program also provides individual maps of 40 selected cities.
  27.      These maps show major highways; features, such as lakes and rivers;
  28.      and points of interest.  Information about population and local
  29.      climate is also provided.

  34.      The following sample run will demonstrate most of the functions of the
  35.      program.  Input will be provided from the keyboard, rather than from
  36.      a mouse.  Print a copy of these steps and give them a try.

  38.       1. Make the directory which contains the program files the
  39.          default directory (for example: cd IST11).
  40.       2. Key-in 'IST' and press ENTER.
  41.       3. On the title screen, press F1 and read the information provided.
  42.       4. Upon returning to the title screen, press F2.  Describe your printer
  43.          and select the keyboard as the primary input device.
  44.       5. Next, change the trip settings.  Select 3 for the number in your
  45.          party, $1.10 for the fuel cost, 25 for the gas mileage, and 18 for
  46.          the tank capacity. Enter 'Y' to accept the changes.
  47.       6. Select to exit setup, then press F1 to enter the program.
  48.       7. Select the USE THE US MAP option from menu 1 and press ENTER.
  49.       8. When menu 2 appears, select the ZOOM-IN option and press ENTER.
  50.       9. Move the zoom frame so that the state of Oklahoma is centered in it
  51.          and press ENTER.
  52.      10. On menu 3, select the PLAN A TRIP option and press ENTER.
  53.      11. For the origin city, enter the code OKTU and press ENTER.

  58.      12. For the next city, enter the code OKOC and press ENTER.
  59.      13. Select any departure month, day, year, and time.
  60.      14. Select 0 for the number of stops enroute to OKOC.
  61.      15. Select 2 for the number of stops at OKOC.
  62.      16. Press any key for stop 1 and select the FOOD option from menu 5.
  63.      17. Select a stop time of 1 hour.
  64.      18. Press any key for stop 2 and select the GAS option from menu 5.
  65.      19. Choose a stop time of 15 minutes.
  66.      20. For the next city, enter TXAM and press ENTER.
  67.      21. Select 1 for the number of stops enroute to TXAM.
  68.      22. Press any key for this stop and select the VISIT option from
  69.          menu 4.
  70.      23. Select a stop time of 2 hours.
  71.      24. Select 1 for the number of stops at TXAM.
  72.      25. Press any key and select the OVERNIGHT/END OF TRIP option from
  73.          menu 5.
  74.      26. On menu 6, pick the DISPLAY/PRINT ITINERARY option and press ENTER.
  75.      27. Select YES for the NOTES prompt and enter the following text on
  76.          line 1 -
  77.            Reservations at the Budget West Motel, 123 Cortland Rd, Amarillo
  78.          line 2 -
  79.            (544) 356-3088, $45/night, 2 doubles.
  80.          Skip line 3 by pressing ENTER.
  81.      28. Print the itinerary, if you wish.
  82.      29. Select the ESTIMATE/PRINT EXPENSES from menu 6.
  83.      30. Select $45 for the lodging cost.
  84.      31. Select $3 for the average meal cost.
  85.      32. Enter $10 for the visit cost.
  86.      33. Enter $20 for the additional expenses.
  87.      34. Print the expenses, if you wish.
  88.      35. Enter NO to the stay-over days prompt.
  89.      36. Display & print total expenses, if you wish.
  90.      37. Return to menu 2, then to menu 1.
  91.      38. Select the DISPLAY A CITY MAP option.
  92.      39. Move the pointer to 'New Orleans' and press ENTER.
  93.      40. On menu 7, select the DISPLAY POINTS OF INTEREST option.
  94.      41. Move the highlight to BOURBON STREET and press ENTER.
  95.      42. Move the highlight to NEW ORLEANS MUSEUM OF ART and press ENTER.
  96.      43. Move the highlight to ..... NEXT PAGE ..... and press ENTER.
  97.      44. Move the highlight to Tulane University and press ENTER.
  98.      45. Move the highlight to ..... RETURN TO MENU ..... and press ENTER.
  99.      46. Select the DISPLAY CITY STATS option on menu 7 and press ENTER.
  100.      47. Press any key to continue.
  101.      48. Return to menu 1 and select QUIT.

  103.      Now that you have a feel for how the program works, you can try
  104.      trips of your own.  Also, try adding new features to the maps. See
  105.      section 13.0 of MANUAL.DOC for details.
